Pakistan Navy Frigate ‘Shamsheer’ Type F22P Launched in China

The second Pakistan Navy frigate F22P was launched on October 31, at Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard, China. The $600 million project signed in 2005 for pakistan_navyconstruction of three frigates in China and the fourth at Pakistan, is expected to be completed by 2013.

Some of the interesting features of Pakistan’s Type F22P frigates from China are:

  • the second frigate is to be commissioned as PNS Shamsheer on joining the Pakistan Navy in January 2010.
  • the launching was done in the presence Consul General of Pakistan, Zafaruddin Mahmood as chief guest.
  • the first ship launched on April 07,2008 (to be commissioned as PNS Zulfiqar) is nearing completion and is expected to be delivered to Pakistan Navy by end July 2009.
  • the keel laying of third ship (to be named PNS Saif) is scheduled on November 04.
  • the fourth ship will be constructed at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KSEW) with complete transfer of technology from China.

Admiral Wu Sheng Li is the first Chinese Navy Chief (Commander, PLA Navy) to visit India. He is scheduled to visit India on November 01. In the past, Chinese PLA Navy commander has visited Pakistan four times (in 1983,1989,1996,1997) and Bangladesh twice (in 1983,1989). pla_navy_commander

Some of the interesting features of Admiral Wu Sheng Li’s five days visit are:

  • to meet Defence minister A K Antony and his Indian counterpart Admiral Sureesh Mehta at New Delhi.
  • to visit
  • to finalize Indo-China joint naval exercises as a follow up of previously conducted joint naval exercises in 2003 and 2007.

It is interesting to note that this visit takes place amidst the recently conducted Indo-USĀ  joint naval exercise Malabar-08, Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS 2008) and Chinese String of Pearls.
